The Brothers

Mom, I was kinda right! Los Hermanos means The Brothers!

Mal, Lo, Mom, Sam and I gathered at Los to celebrate 1/11/11, or rather...we just felt like it. Many a topic was discussed, and we decided we needed to get together as stisters and ma for a DIY project. But what? Something unusual...not "Provo"...something to fit in the home of this brat. Any idears?

And shut up. Shut up. He kills me. The foolproof way I can get him to smile these days is by saying, "ma-ma-ma-ma-ma."
He thinks it's hilarious that I'm trying to get him to say that.

Oh, and beeteedoubleyou, tooth #2 poked through today. That lucky duck.

Sunday Play

Sunday morning, we headed out to the front room to give daddy some sleep in time.
We logged some serious toy chewing and book reading time.
Both of us.

Such a gleeful boy in the morning!

Always On My Mind

Step One: We admitted we were powerless over Diet Coke—that our lives had become unmanageable.

Step Two: Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Can't seem to make it past Step Two

Month Seven

  • Has one itty bitty tooth, and we can see the other one is about to poke through
  • Not sure of his weight since I'm pretty sure my scale is broken, but he's heavy enough to turn my arm into jell-o after toting him around in his carseat for longer than 5 minutes.
  • Loves sitting up in the tub.
  • So squealy!
  • Recently started to scream, just for the heck of it, and oh, how it pierces my ears.
  • Loves his skinny jeans, he feels much more productive and feisty in them.
  • So excited to have two new cousins to play with in less than six weeks!
  • Does this fake cough that we can see right through.
  • Has been getting up on his hands and knees and rocking back and forth when I get him up in the morning and bring him onto our bed to play. I haven't seen him do it any other time during the day. Can't imagine it'll be too much longer before he's crawling, which I wouldn't mind putting off for quite awhile.
  • Loves to talk to himself in his carseat.
  • When he's given extra attention in his highchair or carseat he gets a little shy smile and turns his head into the side of his seat.
  • Rarely fusses when we put him down for the night. Just cuddles his IceBat and squizzles around (PeterTerm for adjusting into your sleep position), and zonks out.
  • Wearing size 4 diapers, which I swear isn't normal for a 7 month old
  • Will attack your face with his hands or face if you get too close
  • Loves reading books and totally calms down to get ready for naps or bedtime when we read to him.
  • So good when he's out with me for errands or lunch, etc.
  • Growing out of his 6-12 month clothing
  • Becoming a pro at putting his binki back in his mouth. Even in the middle of the night when he wakes up and finds he needs a little soothing. I forsee a serious addiction in the making...taking this away in a year is going to be ROUGH.

My Tiny Human Necessities

In no way am I a baby expert, know-it-all-mom, baby pro, etc. but there a number of baby products I've learned over the last seven months I could not live without, and thought I might share!

Hands down, my #1 baby item. A tip off from a sister-in-law's sister-in-law. We have been huge advocates of swaddling, and found that in the first few months Samson would settle right down once he was swaddled. Along with our belief in swaddling came extreme fear in SIDS. Add paranoia to a new mother's raging hormones, and BAM! She's crazy.

We swaddled Samson until he was roughly four months old, and for the few months before that he had begun to unwrap himself a little, but I could rest easy knowing that he was wrapped in a very breathable, lightweight blanket that was also very large and square making it much easier to wrap a tight swaddle that couldn't come all the way undone.

There are also easy instructions on their website on how to swaddle, so the SwaddleMe becomes unnecessary.

Halo Sleep Sack
(I also like the Summer Slumber Sack)

When Sam began rolling around I knew the days of swaddling were over, but couldn't bare to put him to bed unwrapped. I began swaddling him and then zipping him into a sleep sack, then after a few weeks of that I ditched the swaddle all together (seriously, I had a tough time parting with it, it was bizarre), and just put him in his sleep sack.

I love it for nap times too. It's a great way for him to settle down and realize it's sleepy time. I also hear it's a life saver for babies/toddlers that love to take off their diaper in their crib. Problem solved!

Baby Aquaphor

Hands down the best diaper rash ointment. We put this on Samson every single night after his bath and he has never had a rash. Well, except for this one time I neglected to change his wet diaper soon enough (mother of the year award), and he got a little rash, but after one night of applying this after his bath it was gone. Other mother's have healed diaper rashes in a day with this as well.
Munchkin Formula Dispenser

We actually got a little excessive with these, and bought four. Fill them up three or so times a week, and it makes feedings super quick. Not to mention the simplicity for babysitters.

A gift from a friend that has really assisted us in getting Samson to sleep through the night. We started using it when he was seven weeks old, and after a couple days of using it, voila! He slept 7 hours, and over the next couple of nights that increased to 10 hours, and eventually 12. We ran out after a few months and I tried using some Aveda Lavender we had around the house for a few nights and whadya know...woke up once or twice those nights. He sleeps perfectly fine during the day for his naps without it, and it's completely all natural, so I, in no way, feel guilty for using it. In fact, I feel a little like a hippy. Groovy.

We are on our third bottle of it and it's worth. every. penny.

Although the stroller may be a bit on the bigger side it's easy to open and collapse, easy to steer with one hand, and the car seat snaps in and and out easily. That's Easy x 3!

The huge selling point for me (besides the amazing orange color that I absolutely consider gender neutral) was the weight of the car seat. Nine pounds! Imagine toting around a 20 lb. seven month old in a car seat that weighs 15 lbs, which some do!

We're super lucky that Samson took to a binki no problem, ONCE we figured out the right binki for him. The soother from the hospital is ridiculously heavy and he had a hard time holding onto it. Plus the shape of the pacifier didn't give him much to grasp onto. And it's pretty unsightly.

Dr. Brown's Vented Bottles

A must for bottle fed babies. Any bottle with some sort of venting system is a must. Eliminating bubbles in your baby's bottle cuts back on feeding time and fussiness!

Tadd's baby necessity:
Air freshener. So Tadd

A couple things I suggest you avoid buying (put that extra money into a college fund!):
(however don't object to someone offering theirs to you on loan!)

Bumbo chair
Once Samson was big enough to sit in it unsupported, it was only a month or so until he learned he could arch his back to get out of it. If you must have one, get a tray as well - traps their legs!
Boppy
I did love mine when learning to nurse, but am very glad I didn't spend my own money on one since I didn't nurse long, and I could achieve the same support using a balled up blanket or pillow.
Diaper Genie
Ew, ew, and ew. No matter what, your house will just smell like you are trying to mask the smell of dirty diapers. In an unsuccessful manner. Cheap sandwich bags or dollar store scented diaper bags, a grocery sack or otherwise inconspicuous looking bag, and a porch/deck/etc is all you need.
Changing Pad and Changing Table
Let's think of another word for a changing table. Ahhh...a dresser! We borrowed a changing pad from a friend and could never discover a convenient way to use it, even on top of a dresser. Our bed, the couch, the floor, etc. has always served as our changing station, and quite conveniently so.

The Lengths We Go...

...to keep our tiny humans warm.

I guess this is the equivalence to baby girl headbands mirroring Star Trek's LeVar Burton?

Can't see, but he's warm!

Do It. Do It. Do It.

Add www.myhairoin.com to your blog roll.
It's about to get caaaraaazaaay over there.

That's right. A commitment to keep it updated.

Most Likely Jinxing Myself

I've made dinner two nights this week. That's HUGE for me. New leaf, you say? Let's not get ahead of ourselves, now.

One dinner, a hit. The second, a flop. In Tadd's opinion, anyway. Me? I'll eat anything.

It's beginning to look like Samson takes after his mother in that way, so far he's only refused peas. I haven't tried more than two or three times because they really do smell terrible, and I can't imagine they taste much better.

Last night he had some mashed up pasta, and only dry heaved twice (trait from his dad). Progress! The kid has got to get used to thicker foods eventually!

The other "problem" we're having in feeding Sam solids is that he would eat and eat and eat if we let him. If it's being spooned into his mouth, he'll eat it. If he's given a bottle, he'll drink it. Trait from his mom. If food is sitting in front of me, it'll get eaten. Add on to that my social eating habits, and I could potentially finish off everyone's meal around me.

So, I've found I need to cut Samson off, or he'll keep eating until he literally bursts. Which, of course, has happened a number of times. Lovely.

Evidence of meal #1.

And I got to smooch on this squishy face between heading to the salon. Notice the teensy dimple?

IF I were to set myself a New Years Resolution I MAY resolve to make dinner at least three times a week. IF I were into that sort of thing. With the help of my two new books (Cooking Basics for Dummies and What to Cook and How to Cook it - Christmas gifts from mother dear), and my mom's willingness to help me meal plan, I could possibly do this cooking thing. IF I was into setting goals and stuff.

PS: I'm loving the name Henry

A Newish Year (by the 6th the novelty has already worn off, right?)

2010 blew all other years out of the water, so Mr. 2011 - show us what you got!

A little slushy Martinelli's to ring in the new year and a kissy-kiss from my lovey (not pictured for your sake)

We put Sam to sleep in Ava's crib, so naturally we woke him to go home. So grumpy.

Digitally undocumented events:

The greatest New Years Eve fish fry you ever did see. Fried halibut, fried shrimp, french fries, onion rings, steak, crab, lobster tail, shrimp cocktail, and deep fried oreos. And yes, I came home 5 lbs heavier.

Mad Gab extravaganza. Where "crime suspect" became "8 grams of fat" and "We the People" was confused for "We ate people", thanks to Corbin. Never play Mad Gab without him, or you will not truly experience the hilarity that is this game. Go Team Cobras!

Another Corbintastrophe...experimenting with Chris' new soda machine. Apparently you have to tip the bottle after squirting in the CO2 before you unscrew it from the machine. Did Corbin tell me this? Nooooooooooo. So what happened? Major lemon-lime soda explosion! And had Kris not insisted on no diet soda I wouldn't have spent the rest of the night all sticky. Thanks dude. It's very unfortunate this event wasn't photographed. Apparently Kyra was laughing so hard she couldn't even talk when she went upstairs to tell everyone.

Garbage Head

Worst thing about this new year? The probability that I won't be able to turn this goal into a New Years Resolution.

I'm proud to say I have not personally washed my hair since setting this goal on November 22nd. And I'm absolutely dreeeaaaading starting up that horrid task again. Any readers feeling the need to enlist their shampooing skills? I welcome you.

Post-Christmas Gift Exchange

We spread out Christmas with the Coxes over a few days, which I certainly won't object to in the future. It's nice to extend the holiday.

Mazie sure spoiled Samson with two classic books, a board puzzle, and edible paper! It's crinkly paper sewn inside a piece of fabric. Sam and Lyla absolutely loved them!

Don't you enjoy my new post-pregnancy hairline?

Samson gave Crew some firetruck legos, which I think he enjoyed!

Lacey gave me exactly what I wanted, a new lunchbox! I'm super excited to take my lunch to the salon. You know, my lunch of diet coke and donuts.

And she also gave me the cutest measuring cups in the whole world. They fit in perfectly with the rest of my kitchen things; pretty to look at it, and very content not to be used! I love them.

Kecia gave Tadd a cool game that'll be lots of fun when it's warm outside...as for now, who the hell wants to hang out outside anyway? We love summer!

I'm in a blogging funk...can't you tell? I've wondered if I should make a goal to continue this blog-everyday thing I've had going on. And if so, what do I blog about? Not much happens around here to actually blog an event of sorts everyday, and this here blog would get reeeally crazy if I just blog my thoughts. You do NOT want to get in here [points to head].

Any ideas? Should I attack my hair blog instead?

Christmas Afternoon...

...was meant to be spent sledding the slopes of Gladstan golf course. Unfortunately, the stupid weather had iced over all the snow, so we'd be looking at more of a Clark Griswold saucer event if we'd gone through with our festive plans.

Of course, the day was far from ruined. The company, delicious soups, gifts and games were all we needed for a perfect Christmas day!

Mr. Bouncy McBouncerson

Mal's new camera in action...I just covet it, that's all.

We so enjoyed this Christmas holiday, now winter can end. Right???

Since Ya'll Care Sooo Much

andsinceIhavearidiculousamountofpicturesthatIcan'tseemtonarrowdownsinceI'mapicturewhore
Let's break it down...

Christmas Morning

"Ummm...I never wake up to such joviality. What the freak is this?"

Warms up to the idea of Christmas merriment in just a few short minutes, and slays me with that sweet face.

I love three things.
- That silly baby face
- My dudes
-Christmas morning garbage head

Good thing no more than $35 was spent on Samson since he was most intrigued by the wrapping paper.

Adorable B Toys squeezie blocks

Cutest of all hats from Yarrrn
Tadd thinks it looks like an old fashioned footbal helmet. Along with Samson's fascination with football games on TV, and this hat, I think we're creating a football lover. Damn it.

THE blanket. Done and done. And it was a success. 6.5' x 7.5'. May he never wish for a bigger blanket again.

Christmasness Cuteness

Yep, you got it. Baby picture overload. Like, for reals. And all within the same setting. Obsessed much?

Christmas jimjams, which I can't get enough of. He'll be wearing these until they come up to his elbows and knees, and that ever growing belly is popping open the snaps.

Right-Left game present!

Hanging with his favoritest person

...and his second favoritest. Tadd's prediction that he's turning into a momma's boy has not come to pass.

Christmas EVE-nts

Traditional games played at Grandma and Papa's

Fish pond - a new favorite among the kids

The concept was lost on Samson

Drop the clothespin in the jar. I'm embarrassingly bad at this one.

No-idea-of-the-title-of-this-card-game, but Ellie is ruthless!

Sam's favorite part of the day: bath time!
The dudes loved watching Sam and Lyla splash around in the big tub.

Story time before bed.
Check him out all kicked back and chill.

The spirit of Christmas, errrhmm...really took over Crew.

Right-Left game

Other digitally-undocumented events...

The finishing of Tadd's quilt, which I swear on this blog I will never do again. I am NOT a seamstress. Luckily, with the help of family, Tadd's quilt doesn't reflect my sewing downfalls. Thank goodness for the patience of others as they helped me!

A Christmas catastrophe at the Leishman home. Some floodage in the basement where all the gifts were being stored (the Cox family hides all the gifts from each other until Christmas Eve, then they are set out before Santa comes). Lacey had to unwrap all the presents and assess the damage.

Fortunately, only one gift was fully destroyed, while others only had damaged packaging. Camme, Lindey and I rushed over there armed with extra gift boxes and wrapping paper to help re wrap everything. Fortunately, crisis averted, and the merriment continued as it should!

A little preview of Always Sunny in Philadelphia courtesy of Lindey and Corbin. Gonna need Season 1 to get a little more of that goodness!

My Resolution?

Not to set one.

That way I don't disappoint myself. Low expectations, my friends. Low expectations.

And good heavens, I'm so glad January is a few days away...I'm growing tired of coming up with "winter like" B.S.

But today's? Weirdo teenagers ice skating in the University Mall parking lot. And yesterday's? Sister dates in place of sister gift exchanges.

I Would've Been Satisfied...

...with only this little face for Christmas.

Winter like: seasonal jimjams
Yesterday's winter like: thick fog. so mysterious and creepy!
